Wins Being Treated as Resignations
February 6, 2007, 10:04 am
Filed under: Cup of Chess Announcements

For a period of three hours, wins such as checkmates were wrongly being reported as resignations. This problem has been corrected, and the Cup of Chess team will review all games played during this period, adjusting the wins and member scores as necessary.

Our very deep apologies for this problem,

Cup of Chess Team

Update: We have finished our review of all the games we believe to be affected. We expect to update the match results over the next few hours, and correct member ratings shortly thereafter (this process may take a little more time). Again, thank you all for your patience.

Update 2: All user ratings should now be updated. We will be updating game results later on today.

Update 3: Game results have been updated.  Please email support@cupofchess.com if you still notice any aberrations.

I’VE GOT ANTOHER PROBLEM AND ITS DRIWVING ME CRAZY!!!! THE CHESSBOARD IS ONLY COVERED IN WHITE AND THEREFORE IT IS EXTREMLY DIFFICULT TO PLAY CHESS!! CAN YOU PLEASE FIX IT?
I LOVE YOU; NEVERTHELESS.

The current color scheme is white/light blue. On certain monitors with lower contrast, this unfortunately makes it appears to be all white. We will be adding a feature to change the color scheme in our next content update, which should hopefully let you see the board squares.

my wins are still recorded as losses and thus my points are still lower than they should be. are you still working on the problem? cheers

Comment by Jake

There seems to be an edge case where the opponent resigns where this (in rare cases) causes the winner to recieve a loss. If this happens frequently for you, please email us at support@cupofchess.com. You may also email us to have us review the games you believe you have won, so that we may adjust the outcome. We are very much working on resolving these types of issues.

this is a bit of a different problem, but when I play a player and lose I lose about 16 points, but when I win, I only get about 7 points. My ranking is 1316. Maybe it is somehow about that. You guys are great! Can you guys tell me what is going on.

Comment by Alexander

The number of points you win or lose is somewhat dependant on the skill of your opponent (judged by their score). Playing an opponent with a much lower ranking than you will give you less points when you win, and cause you to lose more points when you lose. Conversely, playing a stronger opponent will give you more points if you win. If you are curios, you can see exactly how we tabulate your new rank here:

when I was playing bobb(guest player) when I had a position where I would have got another queen from a pawn and a checkmate,it said that my opponent disconnected.I waited about five minutes and then went away from the page wich made it be as if I lost and I lost 28 points. You guys are great! Can you guys please replace my score to what it is suppost to be from that game.

Comment by Alexander

Please send an email to support@cupofchess.com with as much details about the game as possible. We’ll then try to review the game, and restore any lost points as necessary.

I have a very unreliable connection. Unfortunately I am losing lots of games because the connection breaks, and so you assume I have resigned! Please can you allow much longer for me to try to re-connect to the internet.
Thanks

It appears the comments regarding disconnects being treated as looses has been….. backdated ?

Eliminating the most recent comments/evaluations of the current “solution” seems to be retrograde in nature, and against the true spirit of progress sought by members and (I’m sure) our hosts.

I gave the current protocol a Failing Grade.

Disconnects should be treated as non-events with no winner or loser.

It’s sad that abuse/cheating occurs for the sake of a stupid rating.

Those who compromise their integrety by cheating know exactly what that rating is worth.

Reliable statistics should be able to pinpoint the most obvious cases of abuse, with banishment from the site the last resort for those who cannot respect the game enough to abstain from cheating.

Treating disconnects as a loss is an atrocity.

A rightful win denied (by cheating) is clearly wrong, but a wrongful loss for the same reason is even worse.

That’s my only gripe. Otherwise I love the site, and really appreciate all the hard work that has made it as good as it is.

Yet another “won game” swirls down the toilet.

It appears our gracious hosts could care less, since the problem obviously remains unsolved.

2:00 PM, Pacific Standard Time is butt the latest unchosen disconnect, should they elect to get off their (collective) dead arse and do something proactive about it for a change.

Perhaps they should invest in VIAGRA for their flaccid server. I hear it’s supposed to help those who can’t keep it up.

QUESTION:

When your server looses my connection, it gives a single attempt of 15 seconds to try and “reconnect.”

When your server looses my opponents connection, there are multiple attempts to “reconnect” well in excess of the 15 seconds allowed in the 1st example.

Just wondering why there is a different time limit allowed between the two examples.

Is there anything the disconnected player can do to maximize or enhance the chances of a successful reconnect.

Would it be possible to add a button to the chessboard display that would allow the disconnected player to indicate that they did not originate the disconnect.

There IS a solution to this problem if ALL are willing to cooperate constructively.

Comment by THUMPICUS

Match has ended:

You lost due to your resignation.

YOUR server lost MY connection 5 MOVES INTO THE GAME.

I didn’t “resign” and it’s doubtful my opponent did either.

Treating “resignations” as losses is a solution to what?

Hi this is footheavydee! I would like to say that I am glad this is being addressed so promptly. I can’t tell you what a relieve it is to know that this site’s team’s are working on this problem. Thank You CupofChess.com.

Kudos Cup of Chess staff. The disconnect rate has improved (gone down)dramatically.

Sadly, cheating continues.

Jhcjh (registered as a guest player) is a cheat, and well worth avoiding.

One move prior to checkmate, Jhcjh bragged on the chat line the intent to disconnect, hoping I’d “like it.”

That was Sunday February 3rd, 2008 at approx. 5:15 PM Pacific standard time. Attempts to “re-connect with my opponent” continued until 11:15 PM. when I “resigned,” in order to play another game.

Just thought I’d expose one cheaters Method of Operation.

Back to the original point, well done Cup of Chess for solving the legitimate connection problems.
